Summary
My view of physics as a shared, essentially social pursuit directly informs my practice of it.
Research has been my full-time occupation. At the same time I am drawn towards a more educative role within the physics community. My current situation promotes interactions with post-graduate students. Even in CSIRO, my communication skills were regularly needed: from taking records of technical meetings, to bringing various physical topics before a varied range of audiences.
I have enjoyed frequent contact with physics specialists, materials scientists, circuit designers, and students in several settings: small in-house seminars, presentations to non-specialists and university classes, and at larger national and international meetings.
Kay Walker
BA Hons. Psychology (University of New England)
Masters of Public Health (University of Adelaide)
Survived a physically and emotionally non-ideal childhood to become an adult who achieved quite a bit in academia and research. Spent nearly 20 years working in a large general hospital mental health unit, realising early on that I was sicker than some of the patients! However I managed to soldier on, guzzling anti depressants, doing the best I could for myself and talking to shrinks. Photography may have kept me from falling off my perch, plus an article in The Lancet and meeting Princess Di gave me some unusual highlights in an often dour existence. Now I will stay on the planet until forcibly removed. You can find me on websites like academia.edu etc and I have 2 blogs – a personal one and a public health one.
